Youth Protection Activity in JingNing

On July 15, 2021, I participated in a youth legal protection activity in Jingning County and discussed the issue of on and off-campus bullying with local children through sharing case stories! In total, 40 students participated in the activity, and they all received a copy of Growing Pains in Law as a gift!

Where is JingNing?

Jingning is an area where the "She" ethnic minority gathers. More than 1,000 years ago, their ancestors migrated here over a long distance to escape war and famine. The blue sky, clear water, and miles upon miles of mountains were absolutely mesmerizing, but due to inconvenient transportation and various other reasons, the economy is underdeveloped. All year-round, many adults leave the county to seek opportunities in large cities, resulting in many left-behind children and elderly people.

My Case Story: Should the victim of bullying be held responsible if he or she was resisting the bully's attacks?

There were middle school students and elementary school students who participated in this youth protection activity. At first, they were a little shy, even scared, but as the discussion deepened, everyone slowly became relaxed and enthusiastically answered my questions, including "what should we do when we encounter bullying? Should we take responsibility for standing up against those who bully us? What is self-defense?" etc. A girl shared with us her experience of being bullied and told us that she eventually told the teacher about her situation. Fortunately, her teacher stepped in and handled the situation, and now the problem has been solved. We applauded her for her bravery and wisdom.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

After I shared, Mr. Li Sun taught you Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on the spot, and taught you how to defeat the enemy when you encounter bad guys. The children demonstrated and practiced on the spot, and I couldn't help but join in. At that moment, I was a teacher and a student, we were together!

Online Seminar

On September 2, 2021, we discussed the issue of campus bullying with more than 50 classmates online. Most of the students participating in the discussion are high school students, who have a deeper understanding of campus bullying. Therefore, rather than saying it was just me sharing, it was more in the form of an open discussion, where we are sharing ideas together.
This discussion was originally planned to be held offline, but it was changed to online due to the pandemic. Although it is impossible to communicate face-to-face, everyone traveled through time and space and gathered in a virtual space from all over the world. It is also very enjoyable to share our distinct experiences!

"Hello, Young Changemakers" Event

Unfortunately, I was not able to participate in the in-person volunteer activities at the third annual"Hello, Young Changemaker" event, but I donated 20 copies of Growing Pains in Law to the participants. The organizer of the event said that they sent the book to the students a week in advance. The students read the stories in the book at home, reflected on the topics discussed, and dove a lively discussion on the protection of minors in groups during the event with legal experts. Some students and parents said that books like Growing Pains in Law are not only lively and interesting but also very useful. This makes me very gratified and I look forward to having the opportunity to meet with all the participants in the future!
